'Inside / Outside'
The proposal creates a series of ‘outdoor rooms’ for Wester Ross. The sites identified each offer the opportunity to pause and reflect on the surrounding landscape while gaining information about local events and places of interest.
The rooms are defined by a combination of simple elements - roof / walls / surface. Traditional highland architecture such as the Blackhouse and its later iterations consist primarily of heavy masonry and earth walls supporting a lightweight timber roof structure which would then be tied down and covered with earth. The outdoor rooms seek to create a contemporary interpretation of this principle, with heavy walls providing a windbreak for seating and information while supporting a light timber canopy structure.
